SAI Executive Briefing: eVehicles in Asia Pacific

The rapid growth of eVehicle sales and production in the Asia-Pacific region can be attributed to the high growth in China, Japan and South Korea. Despite ambitious goals, eV market conditions in other Asia-Pacific countries are under-developed despite very vocal support from local governments.

The Chinese eV market has been in a high-growth stage since 2016, driven mainly by government incentives. It is mandated by the Chinese government that by 2025, eV sales will account for more than 20% of total vehicle sales annually. In China the institutional environment for the eV industry (mainly PEV) has been increasingly favorable, evidenced by frequent high-level official statements, major policy implementations, massive governmental and industrial investment, and generous purchase and adoption incentives. The local OEMs have dominated the Chinese eV market by taking an early lead. Trends indicate that small BEV passenger cars will register a fast growth in the eV market.
Battery technologies have rapidly changed and adapted to market conditions. It is expected that battery material suppliers will change their policy of business expansion from self-sustaining growth to forming alliances. As a result, automotive OEMs will collaborate with battery suppliers to take control of LIB technology developments.
