CASE EXAMPLE: COMPETITIVE ASSESSMENT

OBJECTIVE: 

A leading specialty packaging manufacturer asked SAI to analyze its competitor’s technology, manufacturing strategy and equipment, capabilities and cost for a recently introduced flexible packaging product

APPROACH: 

In an eight week time-frame, SAI developed specific insights about the competitor’s manufacturing strategy and equipment, cost position and production plan that assisted the client in its decision to launch a competitive product

RESULTS: 

The information developed by SAI enabled the client to develop a more effective market campaign, pricing strategy and competitive product positioning for its new product

CASE EXAMPLE: NON-PRESSURE SENSITIVE (NPS) – ASIA

OBJECTIVE: 

SAI’s client, a world leader in pressure sensitive technology, wanted to understand the current and forecast volume of narrow web converters’ NPS business as well as satisfaction levels, unmet needs, and growth plans of key converters.

APPROACH: 

SAI developed information by conducting 125 interviews among suppliers of equipment suppliers, NPS materials, channel partners, narrow web converters, end users, advertizing and promotional companies, regulatory authorities, associations, and others. SAI developed an overview of NPS materials market, end-use segments, and narrow web converters.

RESULTS: 

SAI outlined key challenges and recommendations for the client to combat these challenges. As a result, the client successfully grew its market share in Asia.

CASE EXAMPLE: COFFEE PACKAGING - CHINA

OBJECTIVE: 

A client wanted to understand the market for flexible material used to package coffee:

  • Current market consumption and future growth potential
  • Competition landscape and key player identification
  • Key account analysis, demand and the needs of major customers

APPROACH: 

SAI interviewed coffee growers, coffee importers, coffee roasters, café chains and flexible packaging producers to gain an understanding of the market and then developed a comprehensive analysis

RESULTS: 

SAI helped its client understand the market, familiarized it with the needs of customers in China, identified which products would be the most promising in the next few years and determined which competitors needed special attention

CASE EXAMPLE: PLASTIC FILM – KOREA

OBJECTIVE: 

Our client was interested in expanding sales of specialty coatings to the plastic film market in Asia. SAI was tasked with conducting interviews with film converters in Korea to develop an in-depth understanding of unique specialty coatings for films, flexible packaging, lidding and protective packaging for foods, electronics and consumer products

APPROACH: 

SAI’s local staff surveyed 45 industry experts, including engineers, sales/marketing management, manufacturing management and R&D personnel. We translated the interviews into English and provided the analysis and recommendations to the client

RESULTS: 

As a result, the client was able to develop its entry strategy and has restructured its Korean sales force

CASE EXAMPLE: CLOSURES – CHINA, JAPAN AND KOREA

OBJECTIVE:

For an existing manufacturer of plastic closures for beverage bottles, SAI developed the necessary insights for the client to defend and/or expand its business by geographic region

APPROACH: 

SAI interviewed and analyzed over 50 customers (beverage companies and their bottlers) and approximately ten competitors (other closure manufacturers) in China, Japan and Korea to develop strategic and tactical business insights

RESULTS: 

In addition to determining key decision makers/processes and identifying specific competitive opportunities and threats, SAI also helped the client develop its value proposition to its target customers

CASE EXAMPLE: INDUSTRIAL CONTAINERS - INDONESIA

OBJECTIVE: 

SAI’s client, an industrial container producer, needed to assess the market for industrial packaging in Indonesia for the market entry. The study assessed the market size of intermediate bulk containers (IBCs), plastic and steel drums, and evaluated market trends and performance of competitors

APPROACH: 

SAI interviewed more than 70 organizations, including competitors, distributors and customers of industrial containers

RESULTS:

SAI provided total market size by type of container, size of container, and customer segment (lubricants, petrochemicals, oleochemicals, flavors, fragrances, and others) and gauged market trends for each.  SAI recommended the most efficient market entry method for the client
